Monkey Mia - 18 September

18 September
Monkey Mia

I'm not sure how long I've yearned to visit Monkey Mia and although many people have said, "It's not like it used to be ..." or, "They treat you like two year olds ..." we headed off at 6.30 am to join about 100 other tourists to learn about the dolphins from the Parks and Wildlife staff at, "The Dolphin Experience". The dolphins came to within a metre of the shore; only two people were selected to feed a small fish to the dolphins ensuring that they retain their natural hunting skills. A long way to travel, but we're pleased we got to experience, "The Dolphin Experience"!

"Surprise" came in for a visit.
The dolphins are recognised by the shape of their fins.
After the drive back to Hamelin Pool Station we finished packing up and travelled to Kalbarri via an overnight stop at a "24" at Murchison River. The setting was gorgeous - a free camp right next to the riverbank.

We chatted with fellow campers, Norma and Noel, 63 who was recently diagnosed with a very aggressive form of prostate cancer and sadly given only 18 months to live so they're doing some 'bucket list' things now.  We enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and as time was getting on, Lorraine decided to made pizzas for us all and we enjoyed each other's company well into the night. Not that we need it, but this is another reason we need to do these sorts of trips before Dementia, Disability or Death find us.
